Subtitle Edit
Free subtitle repair with a local file workflow
Where it fits
Subtitle Edit is a free, open-source subtitle editor for people who need to fix timing, correct text or convert an existing subtitle file. Its version 5 documentation covers Windows, macOS and Linux, alongside the seconv command-line converter. A fixed delay and gradually drifting captions need different repairs: shifting all cues suits a constant offset, while point synchronization uses reference positions from the matching video. Core editing works locally. Optional online translation and recognition providers have separate data-handling terms. Our bounded seconv 5.2.0 test shifted 12 synthetic cues across English, Simplified Chinese and Spanish files without changing their text or line breaks. It did not evaluate speech recognition, video playback or the desktop interface.
Consider it for
- Repairing an existing subtitle file
- Correcting a constant timing offset
- Local subtitle format conversion
Know the limits
- A fixed shift does not repair changing drift or missing scenes
- Optional online services have their own privacy terms and may charge separately
- Our test does not establish transcription accuracy or desktop usability
