Inkscape and GIMP are often listed together because both are free and open source. The useful distinction is the work you need to preserve. A logo built from paths needs a different editable structure from a retouched photograph, even when both are eventually delivered as a PNG.

Choose the master format before the delivery format
A PNG can be the final output of either application, so that file extension does not decide which editor to use. Inkscape's native SVG holds vector artwork. GIMP's XCF saves the working image structure, though it does not preserve undo history. Think about the revision that will arrive later: changing the shape of a logo or correcting the lighting in a photograph. Keep the master suited to that revision and export a separate delivery file. Starting from the final PNG alone can remove information needed for further work.

Inkscape documents node editing, Boolean operations, shape building and live path effects. Those tools address the construction of vector artwork through editable geometry. Its text controls and path operations are useful reasons to evaluate it for lettering or diagrams. Placing a photograph inside an SVG document does not automatically turn that photograph into vector shapes. The application also offers tracing, but the resulting paths still need to be checked against the intended artwork. Test a representative design at its smallest and largest required display sizes.

GIMP 3.2 introduces vector layers and linked layers, so an older claim that it has no vector capability is incomplete. Those additions do not remove Inkscape's purpose as a dedicated vector editor. They do provide another way to combine elements in an image-editing workflow. Current GIMP release guidance is more reliable for this distinction than an older FAQ section that discusses vector layers as a future plan. Check the installed version before following a tutorial, because a workflow built around these newer layers depends on having the relevant release.

GIMP's current release notes describe linking an external SVG so changes made in Inkscape can update the linked content. That suggests a useful division of work: keep the vector source in Inkscape and assemble it with photographic material in GIMP. This is a documented possibility, not a workflow benchmark performed for this comparison. Try it with a copy of one small project first. Keep the SVG beside the image project and check what happens after moving the files, because linked resources introduce another dependency into a handoff.

Inkscape distinguishes its editable SVG metadata from a Plain SVG export. Retain the original master while checking what the destination software accepts. GIMP's FAQ also distinguishes CMYK import and export support from its RGB internal editing model. A printer asking for a particular profile or file specification therefore deserves a direct output check. The presence of PDF export or a color selector alone does not establish that every production requirement is met. Ask for the actual delivery specification and inspect a representative exported file before preparing an entire job.

Both projects permit commercial work under their software terms, but the editing application does not determine the reuse rights of a photograph or font you bring into it. For a practical evaluation, create one vector asset in Inkscape and one photo correction in GIMP using material you control. Export them, reopen the working masters and make a requested revision. Record any conversion or font problems you encounter. This comparison has not performed those tasks, so it makes no claim that either interface is faster to learn or that every imported file remains intact.

Should I save only the exported PNG?
Keep the editable SVG or XCF master as well. A finished raster export does not preserve all of the structure available in the original project.
